CALIFORNIA SENATE BILL 8 WOULD TAX SERVICES

Senate Bill 8, which was introduced in December, would add a sales tax on services. For example, when you take your car to Del Mar Automotive now for repairs you pay sales tax on the parts used but not on the labor to diagnose or install parts. Likewise, the plumber that comes to your house to replace your water heater will add sales tax on the water heater but not on his labor to install it. This bill would tax all that labor, plus other services such as hairdressers, gyms, gardeners, housekeepers, veterinarians, etc., if those businesses exceed $100,000 in gross sales. There is a lot of language in the bill that attempts to justify the conclusion and you can click on this SB8 link for those details. What follows is the concluding language listing the three goals of the bill (highlighting and underlining are mine): The Upward Mobility Act seeks to make three broad changes to the tax code: Broaden the tax base by imposing a sales tax ... read more

DEL MAR AUTOMOTIVE NOW SMOG TESTING 2000 AND UP MODELS

PDEL MAR AUTOMOTIVE NOW DOING MODEL 2000 AND UP SMOG TESTS Del Mar, California – December 24, 2014 The California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) has implemented a simpler smog testing procedure for year 2000 and newer cars & trucks. Relying only on data from the vehicle on board diagnostic system (OBD) to confirm efficient operation and issue a certificate, the bulky dynamometer equipment and tail pipe emissions testing are eliminated. Del Mar Automotive has purchased and, effective today, is up and running with this new OBD testing equipment. This adds another level of service and convenience for current and future customers. Call 858-755-2404 for a smog test during the first quarter of 2015 to get $10 off the regular price

SMALL BUSINESS HEADACHE: COMPLYING WITH ADA

By Allen L Phillips We have 2 owners plus 2 employees in our small automotive repair business. Most of our time is consumed with the day to day business of providing the best possible customer service to our customers. We have little time to worry about the many laws and regulations that could adversely affect our operations since it seems there is little we can do to change them. But there is one pending law, Assembly Bill (AB) 1885, that has been sitting in the California Assembly Judiciary Committee that would ease one area of concern and we could use your help to shake it loose. Let me explain: Up until recently we were hearing frequent news that some business nearby has been sued for non-compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act which says that people with disabilities must have easy access to your business, your service counter, your waiting room and whatever other “public accommodations” you make available to them. TESTAMONIAL

About a month ago we received the following email from a long time customer. Todd/Al, I want to thank you, as always, for taking such good care of me, my car, my friends etc. I would really like to provide lunch for the shop. Please tell me how many guys are there, any special dietary needs, and the best date. Thank you so much, Eva P.S. I don’t know if you know how wonderful it is to have an automotive shop that one can trust and rely upon for service and integrity. As a single woman, I have to tell you…..It’s nearly unheard of. All of my gratitude, Eva T We tried to convince her that lunch wasn’t necessary but she insisted and when she arrived this week with a crock pot of chili and all the fixins, we all agreed that it was wonderful. My advice to others – never turn down a free lunch

NOTICE – GOOFY JULY 4 HOLIDAY SCHEDULE

We are going to do 4th of July week backwards. We will be closed on Monday, June 30th and open on Friday, July 4th. So we will be working July 1st through the 4th. We know it’s crazy but hopefully, it will help some people who have difficulty getting their cars into us. Just remember that the Fair will open on the 4th at 10 am and there will be an increase in traffic. You could also consider spending July 4th at the fair and leaving your car with us to be worked on (free parking). And please take a moment on July 4th to remember what that holiday is all about and ponder the bravery and brilliance of those representatives of the original 13 colonies who signed their names to that amazing document, pledging “to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor”. URGENT – STOP EXCESSIVE AUTO REPAIR COSTS

URGENT! – HELP NEEDED TO STOP EXCESSIVE PRICE INCREASES FOR AUTO SERVICE & REPAIR The California Senate has passed, and the Assembly is considering, SB935, a bill which would substantially increase the California minimum wage. This would be on top of recently passed legislation which will increase the minimum from $8 per hour to $9 effective this coming July 1st, and then to $10 on January 1, 2016. SB935 would override the current schedule with additional increases as follows: January 1, 2015 – $11.00 per hour (equals a $3 jump in 6 months time) January 1, 2016 – $12.00 January 1, 2017 – $13.00 The minimum wage would then be raised each year by the rate of inflation. What does not seem to be well understood about minimum wage increases is the domino effect. One employee may be happy to get his mandated bump to $9 an hour but his supervisor, who may be making $10 an hour, will expect an increase as well, and so on up the ladder. Another factor is that most union labor agreements ... read more

WHY YOU SHOULD SIGN THE MINIMUM WAGE PETITION

If you live in the City of San Diego you either have been or soon will be approached by a signature gatherer for you to sign the minimum wage petition. If enough signatures are gathered in time and certified, it would put the recently approved City minimum wage ordinance to a vote of the people. The City’s ordinance would raise the minimum wage in San Diego higher than that set by the State of California. Del Mar Automotive is not affected because we are not in the City of San Diego, but many other repair shops and dealerships in our area will be affected both by the minimum wage and Wage Order 9. Wage Order 9, issued by the California Industrial Welfare Commission in 2004, requires that employees who are required to provide their own tools be paid double the minimum wage. Virtually all dealerships and auto repair shops require technicians to provide their own tools and this increase will put added pressure on our industry which will result in increased prices for repai ... read more

Direct Injection Systems

Direct Injection Systems

GASOLINE DIRECT INJECTION SYSTEMS MAY REQUIRE SERVICING If the car you are driving now doesn’t have Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) your next one probably will. The following 2.5 minute video illustrates how fuel systems have evolved to gasoline direct injection (GDI), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIVdPaTSot8. Undesirable carbon buildup on the intake valves is occurring in many current models with GDI systems. This is apparently caused by accumulating deposits that the port injection systems, which GDI replaces, tended to wash off the intake valves. With GDI however, those deposits build up on the back side of the intake valves, getting baked on, or carbonized, which frequently results in poor running and illumination of the check engine light. We have found that performing a fuel injection service or intake service will not break down those carbon deposits. So we have purchased specialized equipment to perform effecti ... read more
